![]() And that’s likely because of things that have, in the end, very little to do with who Clinton is and much more to do with the work she has been engaged in this year. It’s Tracy Flick-not Elizabeth McCord or Mackenzie Allen or Selina Meyer, but Tracy Flick, whose ambition makes her a menace-whom Hillary Clinton is (still!) asked about. They have been evidence of Hollywood, whose products have claimed partial credit for marriage equality and the presidency of Barack Obama, recognizing its great capacity for world-expanding, and then attempting to use that power for good-one Madame President at a time.Īnd yet, despite all the accomplished women who have occupied Hollywood’s various West Wings, it’s Tracy Flick, the manic pixie scheme girl-the perfectionist, the know-it-all, the girl whose hand was perma-raised-who has persevered as a metaphor. These characters have been the stuff of (political) science fiction: They have been framed, self-consciously, for the future. In the high-heeled footsteps of Leslie McCloud in 1964’s Kisses for My President and Julia Mansfield in 1985’s Hail to the Chief have come Kathryn Bennett in Air Force One, Elaine Barrish in Political Animals, Mackenzie Allen in Commander in Chief, Caroline Reynolds in Prison Break, Claire Underwood in House of Cards, Sally Langston in Scandal, Elizabeth McCord in Madam Secretary, Selina Meyer in Veep, and many more. That’s not to say that TV and movies haven’t, in the many years leading up to a woman’s clinching of a major-party presidential nomination, provided the American public with a host of fictional female leaders. People compare Clinton to Tracy Flick, the stateswoman to the organization kid, for a simple reason: Hollywood hasn’t given them anyone better to compare her to. ![]() Pop culture has long offered depictions of women in positions of political power ambition, however, is another matter. ![]() And that’s been reflected not just in news media reactions to Hillary Clinton’s runs for office, but also in broader cultural treatments of (necessarily fictional) lady presidents. ![]() For women, though, the self-assertions required of political candidacy are particularly fraught. It revels, in its sardonic way, in the lingering martial framework of the “campaign.” The story of Tracy Flick’s effort to win the presidency of Carver High School’s student government is a broader meditation on political ambition-and on the pitfalls and punishments that can result, in particular, when that ambition has the audacity to be realized by a woman.Īmericans, who are subject to a mess of rules when it comes to self-assertion (confidence: good! arrogance: bad! hard work: good! overeagerness: sad!), have, by extension, a generally awkward relationship with political ambition-one whose awkwardness extends across genders and generations. On the other hand, though, the association makes perfect sense: Election is all about the layered strifes of, well, elections. senator and secretary of state-and also the mother, and the grandmother, and the woman whom the American media once spent years chastising for an expressed preference against cookie-baking-with a cupcake-wielding adolescent. It is supremely strange, on the one hand, that the American public would associate the former lawyer and First Lady and U.S. ![]() “The creation of these contiguous nodes of research expertise across the province is what is going to help crystallize and strengthen the pan-Alberta approach to developing research on fundamental quantum science in the province,” says McDonald.Īdditionally, QHA expects to recruit at least eight new quantum research professors to the province over the next two years. André McDonald, PhD, associate vice-president of strategic research initiatives and performance at the University of Alberta. “This is something for Albertans to be proud of,” says Bird, president of Ptarmigan Charitable Foundation, who sees the establishment of a network dedicated to expanding the horizons of quantum science knowledge as a path to “discoveries in a field that promises to be transformational to the improvement of society.”įunding through QHA is intended to build quantum science capacity in Alberta by attracting new talent and supporting existing expertise, adds Dr. “Quantum Horizons Alberta activates our provincial research ecosystem, leveraging the talent across our universities, and enabling us to elevate and expand our capabilities.” Creating new knowledge to move society forward is, he says, “fundamental to the purpose of great research universities.”įor their part, Bird and his fellow donors are excited to partner with Alberta’s major research universities that “have the bench strength” to achieve greatness on the world stage - and he expects the investment in QHA will grow as supporters from across Canada join the initiative. “These community leaders have stepped forward to invest in foundational quantum discovery because they understand how critical new knowledge is to Alberta’s future,” says McCauley. QHA, Thompson adds, is not just a “top-up” to quantum science studies already underway rather, he says, “it’s a perfect complement that completes the ecosystem of quantum science studies in Alberta to accelerate and impact research outcomes around the world.” “These missions primarily focus on the discovery and applications of quantum science, but this investment to create Quantum Horizons Alberta will strengthen and expand critical foundational work.” Governments around the world, including here in Canada, are launching quantum strategies, and quantum knowledge-translation is booming,” he says. “Quantum technology is really hitting its stride right now. Robert Thompson, PhD, UCalgary’s associate vice-president (research). The timing of this novel and generous gift to fuel quantum science research is ideal, says Dr. The $25-million initiative will grow the province’s already considerable capacity in this field, and complement current federal and provincial investment in quantum-based company- and product-creation. ![]() Quantum Horizons Alberta (QHA), a new research partnership initiated by a group of visionary donors, brings together the University of Calgary, University of Alberta and University of Lethbridge to advance interdisciplinary foundational quantum research. ![]() While Alberta has long been building momentum in quantum research, our province is now set to become a leader in the pursuit of foundational knowledge of quantum science to further its immense potentials here and around the world. Some of the tiniest particles of matter in the universe - from quarks to neutrinos to atoms and molecules - hold the power to fuel major scientific breakthroughs to positively transform the human condition.Īn understanding of these sub-atomic- and atomic-scale building blocks has already helped scientists revolutionize computing power, medical imaging and cybersecurity. ![]() The two versions, which are very similar but not identical in DNA sequence, are called homologs, and in most cells they maintain a completely separate existence as independent chromosomes.Īfter a chromosome is duplicated by DNA replication, the twin copies of the fully replicated chromosome at first remain tightly linked along their length and are called sister chromatids. For each of the autosomal chromosome pairs, one member was initially inherited from the male parent (a paternal chromosome) and the other was initially inherited from the female parent (a maternal chromosome). A diploid nucleus contains two closely similar versions of each chromosome. The set of chromosomes of a typical sexually-reproducing organism consists of autosomes, which are common to all members of the species, and sex chromosomes, which are differently allocated according to the sex of the individual. More recent genetic and molecular studies have begun to identify the meiosis-specific proteins that cause the chromosomes to behave in a special way and mediate the genetic recombination events that occur in meiosis.ĭuplicated Homologous Chromosomes Pair During Meiosis Consequently, it was not until the early 1930s, as a result of painstaking cytological and genetic studies, that the essential events of meiosis were finally established. (Mitosis, which refers to the nuclear division that occurs during an ordinary mitotic cell division (discussed in Chapter 18), is from the Greek word mitos, meaning “a thread.” The term refers to the threadlike appearance of the chromosomes as they condense during nuclear division-a process that occurs in both meiotic and mitotic divisions.) The behavior of the chromosomes during meiosis turned out to be considerably more complex than expected. ![]() This type of division is called meiosis, from the Greek, meaning diminution. The finding also implied that germ cells must be formed by a special kind of nuclear division in which the chromosome complement is precisely halved. ![]() The chromosome theory of heredity therefore explained the long-standing paradox that the maternal and paternal contributions to the character of the progeny seem to be equal, despite the enormous difference in size between the egg and sperm (see Figure 20-4). In 1883, it was discovered that, whereas the fertilized egg of a roundworm contains four chromosomes, the nucleus of the egg and that of the sperm each contain only two chromosomes. The realization that gametes are haploid, and must therefore be produced by a special type of cell division, came from an observation that was also among the first to suggest that chromosomes carry genetic information. ![]() Restoration Shamans that have Jewelcrafting (350) should use 3 Runed Dragon's Eyewhen possible.A gardening staple since 1985, Living Earth® is a leading manufacturer of the best organic mulch, compost, soil and high-performance amendments in the industry. +8 Haste Rating and +4 Mana every 5 seconds +10 Haste Rating and +5 Mana every 5 seconds +9 Spell Power and +4 Mana every 5 seconds +12 Spell Power and +5 Mana every 5 seconds ![]() +11 Mana every 5 seconds and +3% Critical Healing Effect +21 Intellect and Chance to restore mana on spellcast Bloodlust/ Heroism will often be used at critical moments where burst damage is needed or at the beginning of a boss fight when all players have their cooldowns ready. In longer fights, Mana Tide Totem can be used before other mana users in your party run out of mana as it may become available again for multiple uses.Pairing it with Nature's Swiftness can be used for big emergencies. He told this woman that she needed to spend $3,000 more for her child to see results the same way he might ask someone to move in a parking lot. When she said she didn’t know if she could afford it he basically said okay and F’d off. I witnessed this POS man say to a MOTHER in his office that she needed to buy 20 more sessions for her kid. In addition, other reviewers have stated that he will bill you for time off the hours. He sells you this not explaining that hidden in his documentation he will charge you more hours for this. He says it is “included” in his clinical hours. Voice technology is an extra service he barely explains to you and offers to do over phone to let you listen to frequencies that magically make you feel better. In the documentation it will have clauses to say that any of the clinical hours you want to use, you must schedule yourself, and that if you want alpha-theta protocols that it is charged at a different rate and so is “voice technology”. He will tell you how many clinical hours he wants you to buy with NF sessions to make you believe that he will be involved at intervals to check on your progress (this is not true he will not be involved at all). During your meeting he will hand you a four page paper and ask you to sign it, he will not interrupt you after you receive it, but he hands it to you in conversation while pressuring you to make a decision on the size of the package that you will buy. The rate that he says on the phone will not be the same rate on the paper when you arrive. He informs you that by purchasing a large sum you will receive a discounted rate. He asks you to prepurchase packages of sessions and clinical hours. MARK WILL PRESSURE YOU FOR A LOT OF MONEY AND IT WILL NOT STOP In the initial meeting you will be pressured to spend enormous sums of money. Your performance data captured prior to the session using a diagnostic tool (Qiktest) or during the session are NOT USED at all other than to charge you money. Mark does not specifically state what protocol will be performed on you before or after your first session. MARK DOES NOT SPECIFY ANY SPECIFIC NEUROFEEDBACK PROTOCOLS If you have researched NF, you may have read that there are multiple protocols available to the clinician to treat the client. He does not disclose this before you arrive. ![]() Mark does not perform these because it would require him to actually work. This uses a skull cap with sensors to make a baseline of your brain activity and helps the clinician to decide on protocols. ![]() MARK DOES NOT PERFORM BRAIN MAPS ON HIS CLIENTS If you have researched Neurofeedback providers or have read about it, you are probably familiar with a qEEG brain map being done by providers.
